A HISTORY OF PANTHER CITY

Fort Worth, Texas, proudly known as "Panther City," carries a nickname with an intriguing backstory that dates back to the late 19th century. This unique moniker was born from a period of economic downturn during the 1870s. At that time, Fort Worth was struggling to keep pace with the booming growth of other Texas cities and faced the harsh realities of a faltering economy.

Legend has it that in 1875, a local newspaper editor, attempting to mock the city’s "sleepy" atmosphere, published a satirical article claiming that he had seen a panther sleeping in the street outside the courthouse. Rather than take offense, the residents of Fort Worth embraced the symbol of the panther as a representation of their resilience and unyielding spirit.

The community began to refer to their home as "Panther City" as a badge of honor, signifying their collective tenacity in facing economic challenges head-on. Over time, this emblem of endurance and strength was proudly adopted by local businesses and institutions, becoming a beloved part of the city's identity and heritage.

Today, the panther symbol can be seen throughout Fort Worth, from public art to business logos, serving as a constant reminder of the city’s gritty determination and steadfast courage.
